  • FAQs Related to Hardness Tester

What is the function of hardness?

The hardness of a material is its inherent ability to withstand localized permanent deformation by indentation. It is also used to describe a material’s resistance to deformation due to other actions such as cutting, abrasion, penetration and scratching.

Is hardness fundamental property of materials?

Hardness is not a fundamental material property. Rather it is viewed in terms of other properties such as strength, elasticity and ductility to understand how these properties relate to each other. For example, it is possible that a material may be hard, but it can also be brittle. This attribute, therefore, limit the material’s usage in specific applications since it lacks hardness.

What are Factors of Material Hardness?

The value of hardness is dependent on several factors such as the load on the indenter, the nature of the load that impacts due to continuous loading, load duration and indenter geometry.

How importance is a hardness tester?

Analyzing the strength and hardness of metals is imperative for 100% successful performance and therefore, a hardness tester is used to determine the property of metal before being used in application. Even a slightest of mistake contributes to application failure and so, leave no room of mistakes.

    Is portable hardness tester efficient?

A portable hardness tester employs an LCD operating consoler and digital display that shows test settings and real-time statistics, results, and graphs. It is a user-friendly device that works on zero-contact method.

    What does hardness tester do?

Hardness refers to the “resistance of metal to plastic deformation, scratching, cutting or abrasion”, stiffness or temper. Different types of hardness tester include Rockwell hardness tester, Knoop hardness, Brinell hardness, Shore, and Vickers.

How does a portable hardness tester works?

A digital portable hardness tester works on rebound method, where initial thrust to the test surface and rebound speed is accurately measured as a Leeb hardness value, which is then automatically converted to values of Rockwell, Knoop, Brinell, Shore, and Vickers.

Hardness tester is a machine or device that evaluates and indicates the hardness of a material usually through the measurement of the effect on its surface of a localized penetration by a standardized rounded or pointed indenter of diamond, carbide, or hard steel. In fact, hardness testing machines perform three common kinds of scientific hardness tests: the Brinell hardness test, the Rockwell hardness test, and the Vickers hardness test. The Rockwell hardness test is an easy process to carry out and more precise than other kinds of evaluation. While the Brinell hardness test is applied to evaluate materials that are too coarse or that have an exterior that is too rough for other test techniques, the Vickers Hardness test uses a diamond indenter to make a dimple that is measured and translated into a hardness value.

In industrial setting, the purpose of the hardness test is to determine the suitability of a material for a given application, conformance to a specification, standard, or particular treatment. The materials to be tested of hardness are subjected to heat treatment or thermal process and they are used in numerous engineering design applications. The hardness property is mandatory since it directly correlates to the material’s performance and suitability. In technical terms, a material’s resistance to stand general functionality generally increases with increasing hardness. For mechanical equipment, hardness is so necessary that it can withstand the functional purpose it has been manufactured like moving parts of elevator shafts.

Types of Hardness Tests

Indentation hardness test: This is the most common hardness tests performed across several industries since materials are subjected to continuous loading. This hardness is measured on a scale known as the Rockwell Scale.

Scratch hardness test: This is commonly performed on brittle materials such as ceramics and minerals since they do not undergo plastic deformation. This hardness test is quantified on a scale known as the Mohs scale.

Rebound hardness test: This addresses a material’s elastic hardness, as opposed to its plastic or indentation hardness. During rebound hardness tests, the material absorbs the impact energy from a diamond-tipped hammer and returns it. This leads the hammer to bounce after it strikes the surface.
