Icu Ventilator

An ICU ventilator is a machine with a set of mechanical devices to help with the breathing process of a patient in need of intensive care. This machine is designed to pump breathable air into the lungs of the patient and vice versa – a process known as artificial ventilation or mechanical ventilation. The ventilator uses a breathing tube as an airway medium to connect to the windpipe/ throat of a patient. While the one end is connected to the machine, the other end is inserted into patient’s windpipe. 

The machine uses valves, compressed air reservoir, flow valve, pressure gauge, air and oxygen supplies, and reusable or disposable ‘patient circuit’ to achieve the whole process automatically. In addition, the ventilator is also equipped with alarm systems and monitoring systems for wide-range patient’s parameters like flow rate, pressure and volume, and machine’s parameter like air leakage, power failure, and remote control.

Also called as a ‘respirator’, it is electronically controlled by computerized microcontroller machines or small embedded system. It usually runs on AC power and also contains a backup battery in the event of a power failure. The modern ICU ventilator has a wide range of ventilation parameters and present data in the form of graphics to enhance visual feedback of patient intensive care.
