Infrared Thermometer

An infrared thermometer is a point-and-click handheld device that is designed to quickly measure the temperature of an object or a human without touching them. It uses an infrared (IR) to detect temperature of radiation-emitting objects. The device uses a sensor that detects the radiation energy emitted by an object (for example, a person). An infrared thermometer incorporates a detector which consists of a lens to focus the infrared thermal radiation emitted by an object. When pointed to an object from a distance, the detector senses the infrared (IR) energy and converts it to an electrical signal. By measuring the amount of IR energy and its emissivity, the person’s body temperature can be determined with ±2 °C or ±4 °F of measurement error from its actual temperature.

This infrared temperature instrument is likewise known as laser thermometers or temperature guns or non-contact thermometers. It converts the radiant energy into temperature unit which is displayed on the design screen after being recompensed for actual/ambient temperature in order to provide accurate results. These are widely in places where a regular contact thermometer could not be used such as in vacuum space, remote telescope operations, electrical/mechanical equipment temperature, a hot spot, etc. It has stood out amidst corona virus outbreak as it is the quickest way used to measure people’s body temperature from a minimum distance to prevent transmission of infection or germs.
